Reporting on the Other: Media and Intercultural Dialogue

The Institute of International Relations along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is hosting a conference on intercultural dialogue on the 7th of November 2017 with many notable speakers. The conference will address the topic of media in the Post-Truth Era and it will focus on three key questions: Is the media a means of understanding or a means of confrontation? Does the media act as a means of disinformation and radicalisation? What are the best practices in media reporting?

How has the internet and the new information environment transformed the way we use media? Has the unlimited availability of information supported dispelling of our fears and prejudices on the other cultures, or has it rather confirmed them further? The panel will set the stage of the conference, by discussing these broader topics and reflecting on the current trends in the media.

13:30 – 15:15 Panel 2 Media and Intercultural Dialogue: Perceptions from the Muslim World

The transformation of contemporary media environment has been extensively debated in the Western context, however the experience of non-Western countries has been often rather sidelined. What are the challenges for the media and the intercultural dialogue in the Muslim World? What are the differences and similarities? The panel composed of representatives of the OIC countries will discuss these issues and provide a rich set of perspectives from diverse backgrounds.

15: 45- 17:30 Panel 3 - Media as a Means of Disinformation and Radicalisation

The issues connected to radicalization and disinformation and the contemporary media environment have recently come to the forefront of the public debate. Yet, what do we know on the impact of media on the emergence of radical attitudes? Is there a direct link between disinformation and radicalization and refusal of genuine dialogue? The panel will provide a close scrutiny of these questions on the specific empirical cases, as well as broader reflection on the thesis of direct link between radical narratives and radicalization.
